What Are The Pros and Cons of The Wilson Reading System?

People who need speech therapy in their local area of Boston may also have another learning disability related to reading comprehension. For some people, the Wilson Reading System may be his or her best choice. The Wilson Reading System is a reading and writing program developed by Barbara Wilson aimed to teach the structure of language to children and adults who have no been able to learn via other learning methods or who may need multisensory learning help. The Therapy and Learning Center in Nashua, NH can help.

How It Works

Students meet in either a one on one setting or in small classes of up to six about three to five times per week. A certified instructor will meet with the student and determine his or her reading comprehension with a series of color-coded flash cards, sound cards and also determine their listening comprehension.

Pros

Students have reported that they like the frequent “change of pace”, as each lesson is very short, usually five minutes or less. The program also offers hands on learning, keeping students interested in what they are learning. Instructors appreciate that the program is customizable for every student’s needs and that the assessment program is quick and simple. In addition, the certification program to become an instructor is very demanding, teaching instructors mastery of the program while giving him or her the skills to succeed as a reading intervention professional.

Cons

The Institute of Educational Sciences holds that the program has positive effects on learning to read words but offers little to no effects on fluency.

The Wilson Reading Program is touted as the best system to help people who have difficulty learning to read being able to accomplish what many of us take for granted. For those who have had repeated frustrations in learning, a skilled instructor could very well help them be able to finally understand the written word.
