Is Assisted Living Right For You?

It can be scary trying to decide if an assisted living community is right for you or a loved one. The perceived “loss of independence”, the worry about becoming a burden to others, and the fear of being seen as a “little old lady” or “little old man” can be very valid. Below are several questions to ask yourself or your loved one to see if assisted living facilities will suit your needs.

·      Do you continually need more help than friends and family are able to provide? If you are stressed or overwhelmed with daily activities and people cannot help you, then assisted living may be an option.
·      Is the stress of caring for a home making you tired? Homes take a lot of work, even for a young person. Instead of attempting to do it all by yourself, an assisted living facility can provide a home-like atmosphere without the stress of you doing all the cooking, cleaning, laundry, and so on.
·      Do you worry for your safety? If you’ve asked yourself what would happen if you fell or could not somehow contact your friends or family for help, it may be time to consider an assisted living facility. Perhaps your mobility is limited, making it difficult for you to get out of bed or even out of a chair unassisted.
·      Do you feel lonely? Being alone most of the time can sometimes be a recipe for depression. Having an active social life is key to beating depression. Good facilities will have a wide variety of activities, and will have plenty of like-minded people around to make friends with.

If you can answer yes to any of these questions, it may be time to consider making the transition to an assisted living facility. You don’t have to “do it alone”. Assisted living facilities, like the Hunt Community in Nashua, are always ready to provide help if you or a loved one should need it.
