Is My Loved One Ready To Join a Nursing/Retirement Home?

It is a fact of life that you will age. However, many people may stubbornly insist that he or she does not need to be placed into a home because to them, it means the end of their independence. Before making such a decision, here are some signs to watch for that may indicate the need to enter a parent or loved one into a home.

·      Increasing confusion and memory lapses, especially when it comes to medication. Many elderly people often take a number of pills every day. The consequences of forgetting to take one or two medications every day may be injury, further illness or possibly even death.
·      An illness. As you age, many conditions may weaken the body. An injury due to a fall or a serious illness may require constant monitoring and with decreased capabilities to go around doing daily business, this may prove to be impossible.
·      Weight loss and infrequent hygiene. People who are unable to take care of themselves may say that he or she is eating, but the fridge and pantry are either empty or full of food going bad. Similarly, if your parent or loved one is wearing the same clothes for days, or smells strongly of body odor, it may be a sign that he or she is unable to launder clothing or wash himself or herself. These signs, although small, need to be monitored as they pose a red flag for someone who can no longer keep up with the things they used to.
·      House upkeep. If the home or yard is not as clean and groomed as it used to be, it may be a sign that your parent or loved one may need help in caring for the household. Stacks of bills and papers, dust, broken appliances and so forth are all red flags.

It is never easy to make the decision to have a parent or other loved one join a nursing home, but if he or she is exhibiting any of the signs listed above, it may be time to approach your parents for a discussion to enter a great and friendly home like the Huntington in Nashua. Contact us today and we will help you to find what best fits you or your loved one’s needs.
