Assisted Living Facilities: A Few Things You Should Know

Since their debut in the early 80’s, assisted living facilities are a cross between a retirement community and a nursing home. They offer the freedom of a retirement community but the ready assistance of a nursing home. Still, sometimes people may wonder why a person may choose an assisted living facility, like Huntington at Nashua, over a retirement community or even a nursing home.

1.     Assisted living facilities help their residents enjoy life more than before. While many facilities offer help to those who need it and give people the chance to live without feeling like a burden to their family and friends; many move into assisted living facilities just to meet people.
2.     Assisted living facilities are fun. Though people do move into one just to be social, many assisted living facilities in Nashua NH offer planned activities (such as bingo nights). By planning activities, many facilities keep the boredom and isolation to a minimum, two of the largest contributing factors to senior depression. And many seniors cannot help but be swept up into an atmosphere that requires them to be social.
3.     Assisted living facilities offer much more privacy than nursing homes. In an assisted living facility, each resident has his or her own room that he or she can decorate and furnish it however he or she pleases. And despite the social atmosphere, a resident is free to choose how to spend his or her however he or she pleases, which, again, offers much more freedom than any nursing home.

So while it seems that moving your parent or loved one into an assisted living facility may be a tough decision, it doesn’t have to turn out as bad as you may believe it does. Given a little time and consideration, your loved one may end up loving his or her new home.
